A Small Talk Session with Marissa Mira Matcha in San Antonio, Texas.
What inspired you to start your own cafe?
I kept on getting jaded paying $8 for yellow oatmilk that was supposed to be matcha here in San Antonio Texas.
What were you doing before you started your cafe? Did you have a related background or any smaller projects you were doing beforehand to work up to opening a cafe?
I was in the military and worked for corporate companies. This was not in my wheelhouse to start a matcha café.
What is the story behind your cafe’s name?
Míra means to look/see in Spanish.
What is the most loved item on your menu and why do you think that is?
Probably the Fresa Matcha, we use real strawberries with no sugar so it’s refreshing and perfect summer drink.
What do you do for yourself to keep things light & fun when business ownership gets tough?
The regulars and being part of the community here in San Antonio make it worth it honestly on those tough days.
What are some ways you’ve found to help work flow when the cafe gets busy?
I would say just focus on one drink at a time and know that we don’t have to pump out 100 drinks in an hour like the big franchises do. We do it for the love of the game and hopefully the customers understand that at Míra Matcha.
Could you share any words of wisdom to someone thinking about starting a cafe of their own?
Just start, put your head down and do it for the love of it.
Do you have any events planned or ongoing at your shop?
We are at the Pearl Farmers Market on the weekends.
